The Next Fifty
Next year, the Seattle Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The iconic public space made its debut during 1962 World’s Fair, drawing attention for the futuristic-looking Science Center and Monorail. Seattle Center is gearing up for seven months of anniversary-centric programming called The Next Fifty. Beginning in April 2012, each month will be dedicated to a different focus, ranging from science and technology to global health to commerce and the innovation economy. The theme of art, culture and design will last from April to October and include a wide spectrum of temporary art displays. The Next Fifty will award a total of $500,000 ($75,000 set aside for youth artists 24 years old and younter) to artists whose vision matches the criteria of the art, culture and design committee. Projects can be from a variety of mediums, from screenings to concerts to multi-disciplinary events. The deadline to apply is July 22.

The Next Fifty
The 1962 World’s Fair was one of the most profound events in Seattle’s history. It triggered an unprecedented era of innovation, inspiration, and growth. And it put the eyes of the world on the Pacific Northwest. 2012 is the Fair’s 50th Anniversary; an event represents a hallmark that calls for both celebration and contemplation. And a collective of citizens are collaborating to bring together the global community as we pause to define our future. For six months during 2012, Seattle will explore, debate, display, and define a global vision. Engaging leading innovators from around the world and within our community, the focus will be on the examination of the seven core areas where Seattle has demonstrated leadership: arts, culture and design; sustainability; global health; science and technology; learning; commerce; and civic action. Public participation will help create this extraordinary celebration and the vision for our city’s future. At the above link, you can share your ideas, your observations, your dreams, and your creativity for the Next Fifty.
