Right On Red Films
Independent filmmaking has been pushing the envelope of what can be done with film on little to no budget, and with the advent of affordable professional-grade digital cameras, indies are rivaling studio budget films on looks alone. Since 1995 the Slamdance film festival in Utah has been spotlighting independent jewels not included in the Sundance lineup and Seattle filmmakers will have a big presence at both festivals. On January 23, Seattle native Mark Jackson’s new feature Without will premiere at Slamdance and some beautiful shots of the Pacific Northwest will grace the silver screen. Without was shot last year on a microscopic budget thanks to the Canon 5D Mark II and the small hardworking crew. The film follows a young woman’s (Joslyn Jensen) journey to Whidbey Island to work as a caretaker for a catatonic elderly man (Ron Carrier) while his family goes on vacation. The contemplative and lush photographic feel of the film captures Puget Sound’s verdant environment and emotions.
