It’s not a propitious moment to start any new artistic venture, particularly one so expensive as opera. Yet Stephen Stubbs, who first made his reputation as guitarist and lutenist, then as a conductor, is doing just that. His company, Pacific Operaworks, opens its doors Wednesday night at the Moore Theatre with a celebrated production created by South African artist William Kentridge, featuring the Handspring Puppet Company of Cape Town along with American singers and instrumentalists.
