Northwest Folklife
Hopefully the rain won’t keep you from checking out the 40th Northwest Folklife Festival this weekend at Seattle Center. Starting tonight, you can partake in a cross-section of performances, vendors and food from a variety of cultures in Seattle. This year, Folklife spotlights two unique cultures: the traditions of the Northwest and the Bulgarian community. The “Northwest Stories” focus features collaborations with local storytellers, poets, writers and dancers. Folklife staff produced eight videos highlighting communities that are part of the annual festival and explore different communities in the Pacific Northwest. The videos can be viewed on the Folklife website, and many of the groups featured are scheduled to perform at the festival. To celebrate Bulgarian culture at Folklife, there will be art exhibits, dance and music performances, workshops and discussions about Bulgarian traditions. Additionally, many local musical acts such as Ravenna Woods, Yuni in Taxco, Wheedle’s Groove, and a plethora of local middle and high school jazz bands will perform at Folklife. 2011 CAPITOL HILL BLOCK PARTY GETS THIRD DAY APPROVED
Capitol Hill Seattle Blog
Good news for those excited about this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party (CHBP): the Seattle Special Events Committee green-lit a third day for the thriving music festival. Last year, for the first time in the CHBP’s 15 year history, a day was added to the typically two-day schedule. A steadily growing audience over the years makes this added day almost a must at this point for the CHBP, which will take place July 22-24. This change is conditional upon increasing the security and safety of the event, in addition to a 9 pm end time for the last day of the festival. Come July the CHBP will convert E. Pike Street between 12th Ave and Broadway into a musical hub, with an additional stage on 11th Ave between E. Pike and E. Union Street. After a community meeting seeking feedback about last year’s festival, 51 of the 56 businesses in the area affected by the event have expressed support for expanding the CHBP to three days. Now that organizers have solid dates for the festival in hand, stay tuned to see what bands will be booked for what is certain to be another hotly anticipated CHBP.

PEARL JAM ON TRACK TO TOP BILLBOARD 200
Billboard
Pearl Jam is on course to nab its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in 13 years. Industry prognosticators suggest the band’s new Backspacer, released on Sunday (Sept. 20), could sell anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week’s end. That sales figure should easily place it ahead of the competition on next week’s Billboard 200 chart.
BILLBOARD RELEASES DIGITAL MARKETING REPORT
Billboard
The emergence of new promotional vehicles for music has been a double-edged sword. There have never been more ways to get the word out about an artist, providing numerous (and in many cases, inexpensive) ways to attract fans attention. But it can also make the job of promoting an artist seem overwhelming. Marketing music is no longer limited to courting a few big names at radio stations and newspapers. Now it requires contacting videogame music supervisors, bloggers and Twitterers. And making sure acts don’t get lost in the static presents a daunting challenge. Billboard turned to 25 experts in music publicity, promotion and marketing and asked them to rank the best ways to promote music across different media and genres. The result is their second annual Maximum Exposure list of the 100 best ways to generate sales and buzz.
SUB POP’S HARDLY ART IS HARDLY STARVING
Seattle Weekly
The Seattle Weekly profiles local record label, Hardly Art. The Weekly reports, “Hardly Art receives financial backing from Sub Pop, not to mention wisdom from the people who turned Sub Pop from a bankrupt, two-man DIY operation into a profitable enterprise currently employing more than 30 people. But unlike past Sub Pop off-shoots, Hardly Art is determined to live to see middle age on its own dime. It’s almost as if Sub Pop is the freewheelin’ parents and Hardly Art is the teenager living in the basement until she makes enough to move out and support herself.” To read the full profile check out the above link.
