UW Libraries Media Center Blog
Contrary to popular belief, librarians and archivists know how to have a good time. Next Tuesday, experience a post-modern pastiche of music and sounds at the first annual UW Libraries Dance Party. Staff archivists will be on hand playing tunes and spinning vinyl from UW Libraries’ audio holdings over at the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Come to dance, listen, and learn more about the Libraries’ unique holdings, such as the Crocodile Cafe and Kearney Barton collections. This event is free and open to the public.
GET READY FOR BUMBERSHOOT WITH PREVIEWS FROM LOCAL MEDIA
The weather promises to be gorgeous, which is fortunate for those heading out to Seattle Center for the annual Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival. For three days, attendees will immerse themselves in music, theater, comedy, dance, visual art and literature. With such a wide scope of acts on the schedule, it’s helpful to turn to our local media for pointers on what not to miss at Bumbershoot this year. The Stranger has an exhaustive guide to the festival with great features on headliners Hall & Oates, metal-influenced rockers Red Fang, soul legend Dennis Coffey and more. Local blog Sound on the Sound picked out the must-see sets by Seattle artists, plus the top five acts editor Abbey Simmons won’t be missing. The culture mavens at Seattle Met Magazine give their top recommendations in each category for all three days at Bumbershoot, as does the savvy staff over at Seattle Weekly. If you’re tired of reading, Q13 FOX has an interview with SSG Music founder Nikki Benson on her Bumbershoot favorites. Whatever you choose to see this weekend, don’t forget to check out the wealth of local talent present in all areas of Bumbershoot this year.

JOB SECTOR SURVEY SEEKS INPUT FROM ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
Seattle Chamber
Every business in the Seattle region is encouraged to participate in the Greater Seattle Chamber’s Job Sector Survey. This is currently the only comprehensive assessment of conditions for employers in Seattle and the Puget Sound region. The 10-minute survey, which will help the Chamber of Commerce collect the information they need to guide elected officials, policymakers and community leaders when making decisions that impact the local economy, is an opportunity for your voice to be heard. This is a great chance for those in the entertainment and music industries to speak up, so act fast. The deadline has been extended to this Friday, August 26.
DOWNLOAD SHAZAM ENCORE FOR FREE THIS WEEK

Starbucks typically offers free music downloads each week, highlighting a diverse selection of artists. But this week, iPhone users will be happy to discover they can get a free download of the Shazam Encore app (normally priced at $5.99). Look for a coupon at your nearest Starbucks to get in on this sweet deal.
STATE D.O.R. SAYS BUSINESSES PROVIDING THE “OPPORTUNITY TO DANCE” MUST PAY RETAIL TAX
The Stranger
Cienna Madrid has an interesting piece in this week’s Stranger in which she talks to several Seattle bar and club owners who say they’ve been told to cough up thousands and thousands of dollars in taxes they didn’t think they owed. Department of Revenue spokesman Mike Gowrylow says the tax in question – applying to “Amusement, recreation and physical fitness services” – is nothing new and pointed people with questions to these sources:
· An article on “amusement and recreational services” that similarly has the “opportunity to dance” language.
· The Department’s online Taverns and Service Bars guide addresses “opportunity to dance” (see “Cover Charges” discussion).
· Another official explanation, addressing charges for the “opportunity to dance.
JIMI HENDRIX COULD BE HONORED WITH PUBLIC PARK
The Seattle Times
Seattle native Jimi Hendrix is considered by many to be the greatest guitar player who ever lived. Yet 41 years after his death, the city continues to struggle to find a proper way to honor the late musician. The latest project aimed at commemorating Hendrix is a park near the Northwest African American Museum in the Central District. Dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Park, it would be the first large-scale public monument to Hendrix; the Experience Music Project has an exhibit devoted especially to the guitarist (paid entry is required), the Woodland Park Zoo has a plaque commemorating him, and there is also a statue on Capitol Hill as well as a bust of Hendrix encased in Garfield High School’s library. A preliminary design of the park was unveiled last week and includes amenities like a “Wall of Sound” that will play music with outlets for plugging instruments, 150-feet-tall steel sculptures, a stage for performances, and lots of Pauwlonia trees (which produce purple flowers). It’s estimated that developing the land where the park is planned to open could cost $2 million. The Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation, which is spearheading the project, has already raised about $650,000.

SPIN CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF NIRVANA’S NEVERMIND
SPIN
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Nirvana’s seminal album Nevermind was released, forever changing our musical landscape. The August issue of SPIN is a big love letter to Nevermind and gives a lengthy retrospective of how the album and the band affected both musicians and popular culture alike. It even explains Nirvana’s influence on the rap scene. Included online is a free download of a Nirvana tribute album curated by SPIN titled Newermind. It features covers from some of Kurt Cobains personal heroes like the Meat Puppets and the Vaselines, along with newer artists such as Titus Andronicus, Surfer Blood, Amanda Palmer, Seattle’s own Telekinesis, and many more.
