KOMO News ran a story yesterday about Sir Mix-a-lot lending his voice to the Sea-Tac Airport overhead announcements in the terminal and baggage claim areas as a part of the Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative. The edgy rapper, whose “Baby Got Back” video was once banned from MTV, talks about his excitement about the initiative. “It’s cool to see something as serious as Sea-Tac embrace the local arts,” said Sir Mix-A-Lot. “It just trips me out. That’s pretty bold.” Mix, along with other local artists, like Quincy Jones, Jerry Cantrell, Allen Stone, and Macklemore, are welcoming and directing passengers to various points of interest, from the USO desk to the smoking sections. The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative is a cooperative effort by the Port of Seattle, Seattle Music Commission and music-specialist PlayNetwork showcasing the northwest region’s vibrant music culture and enhancing the experience of millions of passengers who pass through Sea-Tac Airport each year. Along with the celebrity overhead announcements, the initiative interacts with passengers of the airport through a local music web player, mobile app, music videos featured on terminal and baggage claim monitors, and overhead music in the terminals.

IN SEATTLE SEASON OF MTV SERIES, ART WILL IMITATE LIFE
Seattle PI
The MTV online series “$5 Cover,” which award-winning Seattle director Lynn Shelton is filming, will finish shooting in Seattle in the next two weeks. The series is a fictional account of a typical weekend in the lives of a handful of Seattle bands, including Whisky Tango, The Lights, The Moondoggies, Champagne Champagne and The Spits. Shelton, who was given complete control over the project, picked them not only for their music but also for their relationships. From story to setting, art imitated life. Most of the stories were either adapted from things the bands had gone through or could have, Shelton said, or the locations were cast as carefully as the bands, with starring roles for venues such as Chop Suey, the Tractor, the Blue Moon Tavern and Wild Rose. Read up on “$5 Cover” at its MTV site. The Seattle season is set to premiere some time this winter.
INTERVIEW: LYNN SHELTON, LOVER OF LOCAL MUSIC, DIRECTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE
Seattle Times
In a dark room in the back of Easy Street Records in lower Queen Anne, local director Lynn Shelton (Humpday) explained what exactly she’s up to with “$5 Cover,” the series she’s currently directing for MTV that stars local musicians. It’ll be out next year. She hopes to finish filming and editing by Thanksgiving. Intended for release on the internet, and then possibly TV, the series will be 12 episodes, each six- to eight-minutes long, comprised of vignettes and performances. Collectively, the episodes present a single weekend in a borderline echelon of Seattle’s music scene where collaboration is rampant and concerts are intimate. LAST NIGHT/Q&A: MASSIVE MONKEES ON AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW
Seattle Weekly
America’s Best Dance Crew, airing on MTV on Sunday nights, is the dance battle equivalent of American Idol, wherein a group of teams are tasked a challenge and compete each week to win a majority of audience votes via text message while being subjected to the feather-lashing critique of celebrity judges. Despite the glitzy production, the show features exciting and innovative dance collectives and this season’s groups appear to be the best yet, particularly because Seattle’s own internationally-acclaimed Massive Monkees are competing. Last Friday, Hollis Wong-Wear at the Seattle Weekly chatted with Jerome Aparis and Bryson Angeles of Massive Monkees on a conference call and asked them about the hula-hoop challenge and more about their experience performing on the show. Seattle Times
For a free night out enriched with music, head out to Hidmo. The Central Area restaurant is hosting a free summer concert series, called “Live @ Hidmo,” with such Seattle artists as Laura “Piece” Kelley, Orbitron and J. Pinder. “We want to make local talent accessible to the local community,” said Rahwa Habte, Hidmo’s managing owner. All sorts of music will be represented every Friday — soul, spoken-word, funk, pop, rock and hip-hop. And shows are all-ages. The setting is an intimate family atmosphere, where the Who’s Who of the local arts community go to relax and sit back as audience members.
MASSIVE MONKEES ON AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW
Seattle Weekly
Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew, Season 4, premiered last night on MTV, featuring nine dance crews from across the country including Seattle’s very own Massive Monkees. For those who are unfamiliar, the show operates with the same basic premise of Randy Jackson’s other side project, American Idol. It’s extremely exciting to see Massive Monkees featured as one of the nine crews on a show with such broad national exposure as they are such an important, if unsung, establishment in Seattle’s hip-hop culture. Locally, their crew includes a vibrant and active collective of dancers and musicians– One Be Lo, DJ DV-ONE and DJ BlesOne are some such members–and internationally, Massive Monkees have garnered numerous accolades, including winning the World BBoy Championships in 2004 against Supercrew (the group that was named America’s Best Dance Crew back in Season 2.)
