Each week we will  showcase a new movie, with special emphasis on how these films show Seattle’s most filmable locations.

Seattle Chronicle (1992) 

One of the largest and most fascinating parts of Scarecrow Video is the Documentary Room. Amongst the many interesting sub-sections contained therein is “Seattle Interest,” a collection of tasty tidbits ranging from pop-culture gems like episodes of J.P. Patches andAlmost Live, documentaries about natural wonders like Mount Saint Helens and Mount Rainier, plus a whole bunch of historical items like Seattle Chronicle. This particular film is a documentary about Seattle’s first 90 years made by Paul Dorpat, an extremely knowledgeable local historian who is perhaps best known for his long running “Now and Then” column in The Seattle Times. Edge of Honor (1991)

The one and only Corey Feldman stars in this mostly forgotten amalgamation of First Blood, Southern Comfort and Red Dawn that chronicles a battle between gunrunners and pseudo-Boy Scouts on the Olympic Peninsula. Edge of Honor was made entirely in Washington State so you have to give the filmmakers props for not sneaking over the Canadian border for some of the action. [Read more…]

FEATURE FILM EDEN SPOTTED FILMING DOWNTOWN

Local filmmaker Megan Griffiths (The Off Hours) began shooting Eden, her newest feature film, this month. The production was seen filming in Ellensburg last week, and this week the crew filmed some scenes in Belltown and White Center. The film is based on the true story of a young girl who survived domestic human trafficking and sex slavery. Jamie Chung (The Hangover II, Sucker Punch) leads the cast, which also includes Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys) and Matt O’Leary (Fat Kid Rules the World, Brick).

MPAA STUDY: SHOWBIZ IS BIG BUSINESS

The movie and TV industry contributed 2.5 million jobs and $41.1 billion in wages to the U.S. economy in 2007, according to an MPAA report. That’s up from more than 1.3 million jobs and $30.2 billion in 2005 as reported by the trade group in its inaugural report a couple of years ago. The impact study, most of whose data is for 2007 despite the inclusion of some 2008 figures, shows that more than 285,000 people were employed in the core business of producing, marketing, manufacturing and distributing films and TV shows. The industry also boosts the cash in state and federal coffers — a key argument in debates over the value of production tax incentives. Taxes paid by film and TV workers in 2007 and sales taxes on goods and services amounted to $13 billion, up $3 billion from 2005.
