NPR Music
Longtime music writer and KEXP DJ Hannah Levine helped NPR Music compile an extensive list of bands from the Pacific Northwest that favor heavier, doom-laden sounds. The result is a compelling audio mix of songs that highlights a burgeoning music scene. Bands like Absolute Monarchs, Lesbian, Black Breath, He Whose Ox is Gored, Red Fang and more are at the forefront of a heavy metal revival. There are also nods to founding fathers of the moevement (like the Melvins and Sleep) as well as recent notable acts (such as These Arms Are Snakes, Akimbo, and Triumph of Lethargy). It’s a thoughtful primer to the darker side of rock in the Northwest.

KEXP DOCUMENTARIES SPOTLIGHT SEATTLE GRUNGE
KEXP Documentaries
KEXP is know for being an authority on local up-and-coming music. But the non-profit radio station’s DJs are also experts on the historical aspects of the music scene in Seattle and the Greater Northwest. Lately, the station has aired several KEXP documentary segments on the grunge movement. The most recent piece focused on the deeply talented but ill-fated band Tad. Led by frontman Tad Doyle, the group had a heavier sound than many others in the grunge scene, but that didn’t stop Tad from gaining the ardent support of a promising new label called Sub Pop Records. Although Tad was championed by fellow scene pioneers like Soundgarden and Nirvana, due to a number of factors they never broke big like their musical counterparts. Listen to the full story here, and click the link above to hear segments on Melvins, Screaming Trees, Alice In Chains, and more.
KEXP SERIES REVEALS THE FABULOUS SOUNDS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
KEXP
Seattle’s music scene is an eclectic one, but the focus on rock and hip-hop often overshadows the rich cultural sounds that inhabit the fringes of our city. In partnership with the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR), special contributor Julie Caine worked with KEXP staff to produce a new series called “Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest.” The program lifts the veil on diverse communities creating music that are often tucked away from the public eye. The first installment focuses on the Co Lam Pagoda (one of the largest Vietnamese temples in Washington State) located in the Holly Park neighborhood, where listeners are introduced to the wandering monk Master Kim. Other installments highlight Seattleite Ruth Hunter’s gusto for Greek and Balkan music, the process of creating a vinyl record, and Chinese opera enthusiasts of the historical Luck Ngi Musical Club.

WIRED TIPPED OFF TO SEATTLE BAND MAP
Wired
If you are an avid reader of this blog you already know that the Seattle Band Map is a project that showcases the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant music scene by visually documenting the thousands of bands who have performed and recorded throughout the decades. The Seattle Band Map is a creative collaboration between KEXP’s Rachel Ratner, local musician Keith Whiteman and web developer Golf Sinteppadon. They took the project online after running out of physical space on the paper map and the resulting website, which is still growing thanks to ongoing input by Seattle musicians and fans, has turned into a collaborative piece of informational art. By tapping into the knowledge of the crowd, the project has become a sort of oral history of rock ‘n’ roll for Seattle that is quickly spreading beyond Seattle’s city limits. The Seattle Band Map went live two weeks ago with only a few groups listed; today it includes more than 2,000. The information architecture that shows the relationships among bands is evolving: Ratner and crew want to make the linkages more descriptive, such as a green line for “played a show together,” a red line for “shared a band member,” a yellow line for “collaborated on an album,” etc. Check out the Wired article with the hyper-hyperlink above and maybe even make an addition to the Seattle Band Map.
