Hardly Art
The Puget Sound is now home to a group of adolescent seahorses who happen to make bubbly, shimmering, indie music. Seapony is comprised of songwriter/drummachiner Danny Rowland, singer Jen Weidl, and bass player Ian Brewer. In a matter of weeks after posting songs online, the band was favorably reviewed on Pitchfork, played on KEXP, and started performing live locally. Hardly Art, Sub Pop’s sister label has signed the Seattle soft rockers and keep adding local acts to their roster. Catch a live performance from Seapony this Friday, March 11, at the Rendezvous, April 4 at Havana Social Club or April 22 at the Crocodile Café. While you watch don’t mistake the absence of stage banter for lack of enthusiasm or appreciation, Seapony will remind you, “The Velvet Underground didn’t talk, it’s cooler to just play song after song, like the Ramones did.” Click on the link above to read more about Hardly Art, Seapony or to check out a few of the band’s dreamy songs.

Amazon
Last week local label Hardly Art quietly posted to Amazon a sampler of 17 of the year’s more notable tracks from artists such as Le Loup, the Moondoggies and the Dutchess & The Duke, including a few special tracks that haven’t appeared anywhere else. To make things even better, the compilation is free. The collection includes a Dutchess & the Duke demo, an acoustic mix from the Pica Beats, and a song representing the fruits of the Arthur & Yu and Moondoggies live collaboration this summer. SUB POP’S HARDLY ART IS HARDLY STARVING
Seattle Weekly
The Seattle Weekly profiles local record label, Hardly Art. The Weekly reports, “Hardly Art receives financial backing from Sub Pop, not to mention wisdom from the people who turned Sub Pop from a bankrupt, two-man DIY operation into a profitable enterprise currently employing more than 30 people. But unlike past Sub Pop off-shoots, Hardly Art is determined to live to see middle age on its own dime. It’s almost as if Sub Pop is the freewheelin’ parents and Hardly Art is the teenager living in the basement until she makes enough to move out and support herself.” To read the full profile check out the above link.
CHOMP DOWN AT LIGHT IN THE ATTIC’S 3RD ANNUAL DOUGHNUT EATING CONTEST
Three Imaginary Girls
Indie record label Light in the Attic is hosting their 3rd annual donut eating contest on Saturday, August 1st at 1p at Top Pot Doughnuts (5th Avenue location). This event is free to the public. There are a few fun and exciting changes this year for participants and cheerleaders alike, including the participation of four other record labels (Barsuk, Sub Pop, Suicide Squeeze, and Hardly Art). As you sink into the inevitable diabetic coma that will result, should you be one of the lucky participants, you will be heralded into it with the sounds of El Vez, who will be MC’ing the event, as well as the Unnatural Helpers, Grant Olsen from Arthur and Yu, and Scott Reitherman from Throw Me the Statue, all of whom will be playing live and doing DJ sets.
