Seattle Band Map
EMP is now displaying the Seattle Band Map within their Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses exhibition that opened last week. The Seattle Band Map is a project that showcases the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant music scene by visually documenting the thousands of bands who have performed and recorded throughout the decades. The Seattle Band Map is a creative collaboration between KEXP’s Rachel Ratner, local musician Keith Whiteman and web developer Golf Sinteppadon. They took the project online after running out of physical space on the paper map and the resulting website, which is still growing thanks to ongoing input by Seattle musicians and fans, has turned into a collaborative piece of informational art. By tapping into the knowledge of the crowd, the project has become a sort of oral history of rock ‘n’ roll for Seattle that is quickly spreading beyond Seattle’s city limits. EMP’S “SOUND OFF!” FINALS ARE TOMORROW
EMP|SFM
The battle of the bands wages on in EMP’s 10th annual “Sound Off!” as the remaining semi-finalists meet this Saturday, March 5, for one last showdown. The final four– Fit for Hounds, Northern Departure, The Oh Wells and wildcard pick Tomten– will hit the Sky Church stage at 7:30 in an all-ages concert to determine this year’s “Sound Off!” champion. For the past 10 years, “Sound Off!” has emerged as the Northwest’s largest battle of the bands for musicians 21 and under, while also giving giving young artists from all different backgrounds a once in a lifetime opportunity to come together and play their original music. Past competitions have brought rising local bands like The Lonely Forest, New Faces, and The Globes to wider attention in the Seattle music scene. For more on the finals show, check out the link.
FREE FIRST THURSDAYS AT EMP
EMP|SFM
EMP|SFM will offer free admission and live music tonight, January 6, from 5:00p.m. to 8:00p.m, as part of its monthly “Free First Thursdays” program. This month’s event features a performance by Seattle-based rock trio Us on Roofs. With song titles like “Dreams of Trees” and “Stones in the River” it’s no wonder that Us on Roofs cite poet Robert Frost as an influence. Combining melodic guitar riffs, superior songwriting, and sincere vocals, this band skillfully translates naturalist themes into catchy indie rock that is both refreshing and quintessentially Northwest. To boot, EMP|SFM’s featured exhibition Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition will also be open during the event. For more information, follow the link.
FREE THURSDAY AT EMP|SFM
EMP|SFM
Free First Thursdays at EMP|SFM offers free admission and music from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on the first Thursday of the month during winter hours. November’s Free First Thursday features one of Seattle’s most exciting emerging rock bands, The Courage. After several years of what was becoming a successful solo career, Noah Gundersen and his backup band gradually transformed into The Courage. With orchestral anthems, ambient guitar rock and thoughtful lyrics, Fearful Bones is a tremendous debut album for a band that has been together for less than a year. In this short time, they have crafted innovative new material with soaring melodies, stunning violin lines and a tight rhythm section, making this four piece one of Seattle’s most exciting emerging bands. This month’s free Thursday is on November 4.
