BLUE SCHOLARS PREMIERE NEW SHORT FILM FOR “SLICK WATTS”
Blue Scholars
To celebrate the release of the group’s new conceptual album titled Cinemetropolis, local hip-hop duo Blue Scholars premiered a short film for the first single off the ablum, “Slick Watts”. Based on the former Sonics player turned Franklin High School basketball coatch, Watts himself stars in the video alongside MC Geologic and DJ/Producer Sabzi. The short also contains shout-outs to several distinct Seattle neighborhoods and fond references to Seattle’s former basketball team. Fittingly, the short was directed by Jason Reid and the crew responsible for the award-winning documentary Sonicsgate: Requiem for a Team, which retold the rich history of Seattle’s basketball culture and the heartache of the Sonics’ relocation to Oklahoma City in 2008. Cinemetropolis, the Blue Scholars third studio album, was funded entirely by a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign. Watch the short film for “Slick Watts” below. BLUE SCHOLARS’ “CINEMETROPOLIS” MUSIC INSPIRING FILM KICKSTARTER
CINEMETROPOLIS KICKSTARTER
Last night local rap heroes The Blue Scholars hosted a listening party for their freshly crafted album “Cinemetropolis” at the Theatre Off Jackson and spilled the beans on an innovative media project launching today. Geo and Sabzi have decided to put the production in the hands of their fans and via the power Kickstarter. Laid out in power point presentation format, the hip-hoppers analyzed their original means of distribution for their self titled 2004 record which relied on word of mouth promotions, hustling their CDs on the side and emphasizing musical quality over marketing. After dabbling in the world of record labels, the duo has decided to get back to their independent roots for their third full length album “Cinemetropolis” and back to their fans for support with the production of the filmic aspirations they have for the album. They call it a “reverse movie soundtrack” project where the music inspires the videos, short films and multimedia projects that follow the album. Hoping that the Kickstarter will help fund these cinematic ideas, they have begun brainstorming for a featurette to be directed by longtime Blue Scholars collaborator Zia Mohajerjasbi. Click on the link above to visit their Kickstarter page that features a bunch of incentives for helping fund the project, including a digital prerelease of the album before the official drop date in June, enjoy the fundraiser video below.
