During Thanksgiving, families all over gather in their houses to share a meal. At the Duwamish Longhouse south of Seattle, tribal members gathered last week to celebrate a different form of Thanksgiving. Traditional Native storytellers came to hear Indian youth tell tales in their own language. Language that embraced new forms from rap and hip–hop to spoken word poetry. The forms varied. But as the storytellers discovered, the stories came from the same place — a deep sense of community. Generation gaps are universal across time and cultures.
