KEXP
Seattle’s music scene is an eclectic one, but the focus on rock and hip-hop often overshadows the rich cultural sounds that inhabit the fringes of our city. In partnership with the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR), special contributor Julie Caine worked with KEXP staff to produce a new series called “Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest.” The program lifts the veil on diverse communities creating music that are often tucked away from the public eye. The first installment focuses on the Co Lam Pagoda (one of the largest Vietnamese temples in Washington State) located in the Holly Park neighborhood, where listeners are introduced to the wandering monk Master Kim. Other installments highlight Seattleite Ruth Hunter’s gusto for Greek and Balkan music, the process of creating a vinyl record, and Chinese opera enthusiasts of the historical Luck Ngi Musical Club.
