One of the best parts about being a musician is learning and repurposing favorite works by fellow artists. Learning the chord changes to that song you heard on the radio, memorizing all the lyrics to that musical you saw last weekend or hashing through the complications of that piano concerto you experienced at the Symphony all inspire and reassure musicians. But part of the deal is paying for that sheet music. Temptations abound with the advent of the internet, which makes it easier and easier to swipe sheet music for free. Composer Jason Robert Brown explains that sales from sheet music account for approximately 1/3 of his income, but so many people are just taking it for nothing, leaving him without financial recognition.
